Diversity Awareness Spotlight

Saturday Science Academy

In the summers of 2013-2015, Education is my Destiny, Inc. partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lee County to coordinate the Saturday Science Academy. The Saturday Science Academy hosted four sessions each summer in the month of June. This academy provides hands-on activities and laboratory experiences for middle and high school students by challenging participants to think beyond the traditional boundaries of the classroom to see what doors a degree in a STEM discipline can unlock. The academy was designed to increase the number of underrepresented students that matriculate to local universities with to study in a STEM discipline. The academy focused on developing diversity awareness, STEM identity, and self-efficacy. With three years of participation, several students were accepted to college at Auburn University (5), Tuskegee University (6), and Auburn University at Montgomery (5).
